A New Start

There are times in life when one needs a fresh start. Such a time is now. I'm not entirely sure what direction this "blog" is going to take yet, only that it is something I can use as a creative outlet to allow my stress and overworked psyche a moment to breathe while I spew forth the contents of my mind into the blissful ignorance of the webcest.

I can only promise one thing: there will be NO stupid jokes, NO references to pop culture, and NO inanity of any kind...if you cannot tell that I am lying (badly) by now, this may not be the place for you to read.

My hope is that those of you who read this will enjoy yourselves, and maybe laugh a bit. If I can accomplish that, then I'll smile a bit as well. That being said, ON TO THE INANITY!

So, I was recently given a copy of a wonderful CD by a patron of the bar that I tend (Jalapeno Tree in Tyler, TX. Come holler at me sometime...I'm pretty bored up there!), namely "Soft Bulletin" by the Flaming Lips. Wow, what an album.

I'm quite aware that I'm coming late to this party, as the record was released in 1999, but give me a break...or don't. Either way, I'm hella enjoying the lyrical musings of Wayne Coyne and company, especially "Waiting for a Superman" which almost makes me misty-eyed. Not in a maudlin or emo (shiver) way, but in a happy, "this is your life, welcome to Sarajevo" kind of way. By the by, if those to things (happy/Sarajevo) seem at odds with one another, then again, this might not be the blog for you!

Sufficed to say that this entire album is good, and not too pretentious to the point of being incomprehensible, and if you aren't smiling by the end of "Racing for the Prize" then you are truly a brigand and a lout of the first degree, and I thumb my nose at you.

Don't think this is my first foray into the world of indie music. No, for that, we can thank the Arcade Fire's "Funeral" album, and Broken Social Scene's "You Forgot It In People" CD (both of which are killer...buy them now!), but for my money, I prefer the Lips' take on the scene. It sets a better mood in my head. And when you work as a bartender at a bar that no one frequents...it helps when something catchy and happy is playing in your head as opposed to dark and depressing. The world can only take so many depressive emo kids with belltowers at their disposal.

(Note: the last sentence should not be taken as an implicit encouragement to shoot people from belltowers or anywhere else. By all means, if you are socially disturbed enough to shoot people, then do us all a favor and when you climb up there, before you shoot anyone, please jump off. It's faster, easier, and we promise, it'll be much more of a statement. Thank you very much.)
